The Silverado Hospice LIFE line series features real stories from Silverado Hospice volunteers, nurses and chaplains.

The things that matter most in our lives are not fantastic or grand. They are

the moments when we touch one another, when we are there in a most attentive or caring way.”

Hospice care doesn’t end when a person passes away. Bereavement services are offered to grieving families after the loss of a loved one. These services can be spiritual guidance, support groups, one-on-one counseling, or the companionship of a  volunteer.

Kelly is a volunteer with Silverado Hospice. She had been assigned to visit patient Jean during her time on hospice services. As a result of their regular visits, Kelly developed a trusting relationship with the elderly woman and her husband Stan, whom she had been married to for 60 years.

After Jean died, Kelly became Stan’s bereavement volunteer. Kelly knew that it was important for Stan to stay connected with his family and also make sure that they were included in his grief journey. Stan’s three sons and grandchildren all lived out of the area.

Kelly suggested to Stan that he buy and learn to use a computer and he agreed. She went with him to purchase the computer and accompanied him to all of his classes.  She showed him how to use Skype so he could have ‘visits’ with his distant family. With Kelly’s guidance and encouragement, Stan became proficient on his new computer and announced one day “I think I’m ready to do this on my own.”

Kelly continued her visits with Stan for a year. Through her compassionate assistance, Kelly helped Stan to heal from the loss of his beloved wife in a most unique way!
