The Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) began in 2004 as a landmark study to analyze thousands of brain scans and genetic profiles, with the intent of determining the best way to measure the effects of treatments of Alzheimer’s disease. This year however, researchers hope to build upon the success of the study by expanding the focus of research.
With participation from Silverado Senior Living, ADNI has evolved to include a more ambitious goal, identifying biological markers in those transitioning from normal cognitive ageing to an early stage of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (eMCI), a condition associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
The new study – Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative Grand Opportunity (ADNI GO) – is a two-year, $24 million study that focuses, for the first time, on people experiencing the earliest complaints of memory problems; specifically those that affect daily activities. ADNI and ADNI GO will complement each other in defining the biological differences between a normally-aging brain and one with Alzheimer’s disease.

ADNI GO Testing
The ADNI GO study is taking place at 51 sites nationwide and researchers are recruiting 200 volunteers between the ages of 55 and 90 who may be transitioning from normal cognitive aging to an early stage of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (eMCI). Participants may volunteer at any of the 51 sites across the United States.
Nurses, physicians and other clinicians will monitor the participants during regular visits and measure the severity and progression of disease using standard tests of memory and cognition.
Eligibility Criteria
- Age 55-90
- Speak English or Spanish
- Have very early memory concerns but no diagnosis of AD or dementia
- Have a study partner (caregiver, family member, friend) who can attend each study visit
- Willing and able to participate in the two-year study, including undergoing at least one lumbar puncture
Study Procedures
- Clinical and psychological assessments and memory screenings
- Biomarker collection
- MRI and PET scans
