Since 2005, Silverado Senior Living – Escondido has participated in Memories in the Making, a therapeutic art program offered by the San Diego Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Every Monday, about a dozen residents take part in the class, led by local artist Karen Walkup. She guides and supports our residents as they use their brush to recreate moments from the past or to paint thoughts that they can no longer find the words to express.
Their creations are then kept at Silverado and, with the permission of each artist they are auctioned off at annual resident art show celebration; with proceeds going to the San Diego Alzheimer’s Association.
This year, the Escondido community will hold its Memories in the Making Art Show on Friday, February 24th.
In addition to the silent auction and festivities, there will also be a special guest in attendance: Margaret Hamilton. Margaret is a resident of Silverado – Escondido who regularly participates in the art program, but this year her rendering of a colorful rooster was chosen as an auction item for the Alzheimer’s Association’s Annual Gala. Her creation was among the few chosen from the 400 individuals who participate in the program every year.
Margaret’s accomplishment is an outstanding one, but so too are the endeavors of all our resident artists. They defy expectation by taking painstaking efforts to create magnificent works of art.
“Memories in the Making does so much for our residents,” explains Director of Resident Engagement Devory Gibson. “It allows them to express their creative abilities, share their thoughts and emotions, and genuinely enjoy themselves by escaping into a world of endless possibilities.”
