The market for Mobile Personal Emergency Response Systems (MPERS), also known as mobile monitoring systems has gained some traction in the last year and by some accounts is expected to reach a value nearing $4 Billion by 2015 (source: iData Research and BCC Research). The trend toward mobile healthcare technologies has also caused a recent explosion of products to hit the market.
Here are some MPERS with functionality that is ahead of the pack:
- GeoSKeeper (from Aerotel Medical Systems): A GPS enabled monitoring device that allows caregivers to track the location of their loved one or receive alerts when they have stepped out of a predefined “geo-fenced” area. Family and caregivers can also call their loved one through a built-in cellular speaker and the device will even auto-answer if the person is incapacitated. Users also have the option of storing three phone numbers to access at the push of a button. The device is also equipped with an alarm button to notify all pertinent parties.
- S-911Locators (from Mobile Health Technologies): Are a series of devices, each with a different tier of functionality. Tier 1 (S-911 BL) is a bracelet that includes a one-touch SOS button, GPS tracking and SMS/E-mail alerts. Tier 2 (S-911 PL) is a device that can be stored in a pocket/purse, clipped on a belt or hung from a lanyard. Its features include a one-touch SOS button, speakerphone, on-demand GPS location and geo-fencing capabilities. Tier 3 (S-911 BL/HC) has all the features of the previous tier, but also includes four speed-dial options, automatic fall detection, and a digital display with time, battery, and signal strength.
- Breadcrumb Devices (from Breadcrumb): The Breadcrumb is available in three tiers, each with increasing functionality. Tier 1, the BC 300 is a device that can be attached to a belt clip, key ring, lanyard, or held in pocket. Its predefined alerts can be sent out as an email or text to a designated list of responders, when a user leaves the specified area. The BC 300 will also create a digital trail of breadcrumbs that can be viewed by responders from any computer or smartphone. Tier 2, the BC 400 has all the same functionality as the entry-level model, but also includes a “help button” and built-in microphone to allow call center operators to listen and assess the situation. Tier 3, the BC 500 is essentially the same as the BC 400, but allows for two-way communication when a “help button” is activated.
