The last two paragraphs give us all a lot to think about in dealing with people with Alzheimer’s. Sometimes we may question the purpose of such a life, but when I see how happy my husband is and how he loves to see family and talk about us, I am so thankful to have found such a place for him to live out his life. He gave his family a great life filled with love, and we can do no less for him. We are blessed to still have him.

I enjoyed reading your story. Having been a hospice volunteer for many years, I can really relate to it, even the chocolate-vanilla part (lol). I think you've chosen an excellent path and that you will continue to do well. You might find these Ten Steps to Being a Great Hospice Volunteer helpful:

I wish you the best on your service journey.

I will be purchasing this book not only for me but for my friends and family as well. It's very easy to forget how devastating Alzheimers Disease really is. Not only to the sufferer but also the loved ones who care for them. I remember my grandfather as I was growing up and what a joy he was to spend time with. Then he started to forget things and became paranoid that someone was stealing from him and doing things that were harmful to himself and those around him. I was still quite young but I remember how angry the family would get with him and talk about how crazy he was. eventually he was placed in a nursing home where he remained sedated till he died. I am a caregiver who has chosen to give life to those stricken with this dreadful disease. I pray I can give them what my grandfather never had a chance to have. my goal every time my work begins is to remind myself this can be me one day and put a smile on my resident's faces. Thank You Loren Shook for sharing your love for giving others Life

I am a hospice volunteer in Hastings, Michigan. I am inquiring about your Petals for Patients program. We too have a flower program for our hospice patients called Embracing Hope. We have only had this going for just over a year and we are looking at other hospice flower programs hoping to "pick your brain" so to speak, concerning the operation of it. We currently have one grocery store that contributes regularly and we have several volunteers who are talented in the area of arranging bouquets. What we are having difficulty with is how we can get all delivered efficiently with the small group of volunteers that we have and to do it so that it isn't so costly to the volunteers in terms of gas money. Have you found a system whereby you have companies or others that donate specifically for that purpose?? We appreciate so much all the info on this you would be willing to share. Contact my via email at jandjsmother@yahoo.com or my cell phone at 269 823-3100. Thank you so much. Marcia Slaughter
